Planning for Timelapse and Outdoor Productions
Whether shooting timelapse for a client or for yourself, there are many costs that go into an actual shoot – which may include permits, gas, gear, rentals, storage media, travel expenses, assistants, food, and your time. This makes it increasingly important to get the shot the first time.
Today, more than ever, we have tools available to us that can dramatically increase the odds of a successful shoot. Whether you’re scouting locations and dates for a production; chasing the aurora; capturing the moon or sun rising behind a particular landmark; or wanting to make sure the light will be perfect – it makes sense to leave as little as possible to chance. Knowing what obstacles you’ll face and what potentially could go wrong beforehand will help you walk away with the shots you need.
Ben Franklin is quoted as saying “If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail”, and I see people fail over and over again because of their lack of planning. Getting To Know ACES: A Primer For Colorists & Editors
The Academy Color Encoding Specification or ACES for short is an open color management system developed by The Academy Of Motion Pictures Art & Sciences (AMPAS) with the help of industry partners. Over the past few years ACES has been used on dozens of Hollywood feature films, television series and independent projects of all types. But what is ACES? What benefits does it have? How can it help your next project?
In this session, join colorist Robbie Carman and learn about what ACES is, it’s different ‘flavors’ and parts, and what problems it is helping the production and postproduction industry solve. We’ll start out by discussing why ACES was created and how it’s currently being used and then move onto understanding what ACES 2065, ACEScc, ACEScct, ACEScg and application specific implementations are all about & their similarities and differences.
Next, we’ll put ACES into action in the popular editing & finishing tool, DaVinci Resolve, exploring how to setup a project to work in ACES, ingest considerations and how different tools ‘feel’ in an ACES workflow. Finally, we’ll wrap up exploring how ACES has huge benefits in VFX heavy workflows by round tripping a visual effects shot from DaVinci Resolve out to VFX and back, while maintaining an accurate color pipeline.
If you’ve been hearing about ACES, but unsure of what it is and how it might affect your projects, be sure to check out this session.

How Speech, Image and Video Recognition will Change the Way We Work
In 20 years, it’s estimated that over 47% of Americans will lose their jobs to automation. You my not think this relates to post but In late 2016, IBM’s AI Watson was tasked with cutting together a horror trailer for 20th century Fox. He spent 24 hours analyzing 90 succesful horror trailers along with the entire film and then made selections. Just last week an Ad agency revealed the results of a head to head competition between a human and AI art director for a commercial spot. The results were extremely close. Whether you like it or not, deep learning is going to change the way we work in post production. In this session, Nick Harauz will showcase some of the latest findings in deep learning as it relates to voice, image and video recognition in the field . We will look at how speech will eventually guide us through making image edits without a mouse, how we can upload photos to the cloud to create incredible art and even analyze them for facial recognition and manipulation and finally how object recognition in video is being tested and used in various fields.

Learning To See: Thinking Like A Colorist
Professional colorists make color correction & grading look easy but why do so many struggle with color? You may think it’s just a matter of mastering a piece of software or getting better at reading video scopes – while those things are important, the fact is the technical side of color correction (button pushing) is the easy part. The hard part? Learning to see.
In this fast paced session join colorist Robbie Carman as he explores how by understanding the tricks our minds and eyes play on us when it comes to color & contrast you can help you get better results in your own projects. We’ll also discuss how things like your environment, lighting and even age can affect perception and how you color correct and why looking at any shot for too long is a recipe for disaster. With that knowledge in place, we’ll discuss how to creatively & technically evaluate footage so that when it comes time to color shots you have a plan of attack that you can follow to let you work faster, but also so you can accurately tell potential clients exactly what it’ll take to color their project.
We’ll also explore how to manage not only your time when grading, but also how to work more efficiently by managing corrections and grades. Finally we’ll wrap up by grading short piece and discussing essential steps you can take to make even complicated projects seem easy.

From Stills to Motion with Photoshop and After Effects
Nothing can look good in motion if it doesn’t look well when it is static, so usually the first step is to use Photoshop (or Illustrator) to design a style, frame, or mockup that can be animated later inside After Effects.
Photoshop and After Effects have a long term connection and like any relationship, there are things that work perfectly and there are also problems and conflicts. The purpose of this session is to maximize cooperation between these two products to take advantage of the power of the two. We’ll start with a ready made Photoshop design that consists of different types of layers and translate it to After Effects composition, then will animate the design to create a promo.
